Searching the System

Our products have been designed to provide fast, easy, and intuitive access to a collection containing millions of documents covering nearly 400,000 unique substances. This page is intended to give you a quick overview of how our system works. For more detailed instructions, please explore our Help System.

The ExPub products can be searched using four different Search Modes. Select from these buttons to switch between Search Modes.

The EXPERTIndex™ Search (a.k.a. - an EI Search) searches our 2 Million Term Index and is the quickest way to find the information you are seeking. It can be searched three different ways:

Starts With searches will return results on substances whose name starts with the text you enter. For example, a Starts With search on "Dinitro" will return all substances starting with "Dinitro".

Exact Match searches will return any results on substances whose name exactly matches the text you enter. For example, an Exact Match on "Xylene" will take you directly to the results for Xylene since there is an Exact Match on "Xylene".

Contains searches will return any results on substances whose name contains the text you enter. For example, a Contains search on "Dinitro" will return all substances containing the word "Dinitro". (e.g. Dinitrophenol).

  • To search by CAS number, simply enter the number with or without dashes (71-43-2 or 71432).
  • To search by EINECS number, enter the number as "XXX-XXX-X".
  • The EI Search is the default Mode.

Please view Using the EXPERTIndex™ to learn more about this Search Mode.

A Full Text Search allows you to conduct Boolean (full-text) searches across the body/text of all of the documents found in the underlying collections. For example, you can search for all documents containing the words "phenol" and "leukemia" and "lymphoma". A search screen designed to build your search(es) and narrow your results is available by clicking on the blue Full Text Search button on the Main Search Screen. Please view Full Text Searching to learn more about this Search Mode.

An MSDSonline Advanced Search allows you to conduct more robust searches across all of the MSDS found in the MSDSonline collection. A search screen designed to build your search(es) and narrow your results is available by clicking on the blue MSDSonline Advanced Search button on the Main Search Screen. Please view MSDSonline® Searching to learn more about this Search Mode.

A TOXLINE Special Advanced Search similar to the Full Text Search, allows you to conduct Boolean (full-text) searches across the body/text of all of the documents found specifically in the TOXLINE Special collections. A search screen designed to build your search(es) and narrow your results is available by clicking on the blue TOXLINE Special Advanced Search button on the Main Search Screen. Please view TOXLINE® Special Searching to learn more about this Search Mode.

A Table of Contents Search allows you to retrieve Lists from ListEXPERT™ by List Name. Clicking on this link displays the names of all of the Lists in ListEXPERT. Simply click on the name of the List you wish to view. Access this feature by clicking on the blue Table of Contents button on the Main Search Screen. Please view Table of Contents Searching to learn more about this Search Mode.
